Teeth in a day

Same-day teeth with All-on-6

Leaving the clinic with fixed teeth on the day of surgery is possible for many people. But “same-day teeth” are temporary teeth, and not everyone can have them.

Short answer

Same-day teeth, also called immediate loading, means a fixed temporary bridge is screwed onto the new implants on the day of surgery or within a day or two. It is only done when the implants are firm enough in the bone. The final bridge still comes a few months later, after the implants have healed. A 2019 review found weak evidence of any difference in success between immediate and later loading in the upper jaw.

What “same-day” actually covers

Advertising for “teeth in a day” can give the impression that you walk out with finished teeth. What it describes is immediate loading: a fixed temporary bridge attached to the implants on the day of surgery or within a day or two. You do not go home without teeth, and you do not wear a loose denture while you heal.

The final bridge, usually zirconia on a titanium framework, is made after the implants have bonded with the bone, which the Oral Health Foundation says usually takes around four months. So All-on-6 with same-day teeth is still a two-stage treatment. The full sequence is on how All-on-6 works.

What decides whether you can have it

The key is how firmly each implant is held when it goes in. Surgeons measure this as insertion torque or with a stability reading. If the implants grip the bone well, a rigid temporary bridge splints them together and spreads the load, which is part of why immediate loading works well for full arches.

  • Bone quality: dense bone grips better than soft bone.
  • Bone quantity: enough height and width for six implants of a suitable length.
  • Grafting: if bone has to be added at surgery, the dentist may prefer to wait.
  • Infection: teeth removed because of infection leave sockets that may need time.
  • Your bite: very strong grinding or clenching can make the dentist cautious. See teeth grinding and All-on-6.

Your dentist can only confirm the decision during surgery, once the implants are in. A good plan tells you in advance what happens if immediate loading is not possible.

If same-day teeth aren't possible

The usual alternatives are a temporary denture for the first weeks, or a fixed temporary bridge fitted a little later once the dentist is happy with the implants. It is less convenient but it protects the implants. If you are travelling for treatment, ask how a change would affect your stay; our sister guide allon6turkey.co.uk covers the travel side.

What the research says

A 2019 systematic review of controlled clinical trials in the upper jaw compared immediately loaded full-arch bridges with early or conventional loading. Three trials found no significant differences in implant success or prosthetic complications. On satisfaction, one randomised trial found patients happier with immediate loading at 12 months, and another study found an early advantage that had gone by 12 months. The authors concluded the evidence was weak and called for better trials.

In plain terms: for well-chosen patients, getting teeth on day one does not appear to harm the outcome, and many people value not having to wear a denture during healing.

Living with same-day teeth

  • Soft foods first. Think eggs, fish, soups, mashed vegetables. Our guide to eating after All-on-6 has a stage-by-stage list.
  • No biting into hard foods such as apples, crusty bread or nuts until the dentist says the implants have healed.
  • Gentle cleaning from the day after surgery, with the products your clinic recommends.
  • Expect adjustments. The temporary bridge is used to test the look, speech and bite, and those lessons go into the final teeth.

More on day-to-day life with the temporary bridge is on All-on-6 temporary teeth.

At Precious Dental a fixed temporary bridge is part of our All-on-6 package. Whether it is fitted the same day or a day or two later depends on how firm the implants are at surgery, and we explain that in your plan beforehand.

Common questions

Are same-day teeth my final teeth?

No. Same-day teeth are a lighter temporary bridge, usually acrylic, worn while the implants heal. The final bridge is made a few months later.

Why can't everyone have same-day teeth?

The implants must be held firmly by the bone at surgery. If the bone is soft, grafting is needed, or the implants are not stable enough, putting teeth on them straight away could disturb healing, so the dentist waits.

Can I eat normally with same-day teeth?

Not straight away. You eat soft foods for the first weeks and avoid hard or chewy foods for the whole healing period, because the implants are still bonding with the bone.

Is immediate loading riskier than waiting?

For suitable patients the research does not show a clear difference. A 2019 systematic review of controlled trials in the upper jaw found weak evidence either way for implant success and complications.
